Kobe Bryant on fear, Mark Zuckerberg on how startups can beat big companies, and the first ever Apple computer

The Z Fellows Newsletter - June 30, 2025

Welcome back to the Z Fellows newsletter! Every Monday we share 3 ideas - to help you build companies, ship products, and create your life's work.

1: Kobe Bryant on fear

“The greatest fear that we face is ourselves. It's not anything that's external or superficial.

I think the greatest fear you face is yourself.

Because we all have dreams and it's very scary sometimes to accept the dream that you have.

And it is scarier still to say "I want that."

It's scary because you are afraid that if you put your heart and soul into it and you fail, then how are you going to feel about yourself?

Being fearless means putting yourself out there and going for it, no matter what.

Go for it — not for anyone else — but for yourself.

2: Mark Zuckerberg on how startups can beat big companies

“There may be some larger company that have some distribution advantage, but large companies are slow and they lack conviction.

One of the the kind of things that I've thought about from time to time is, why was it the case that we were able to build Facebook and that some other company didn't?

It wasn't like it was a super novel idea. There was Friendster before there MySpace there's all this stuff. Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, they all like had versions of it.

Why didn't they do it? It's not that they had a lack of talent. We were a ragtag group of children.

I kind of think the reason is because people doubt new ideas before they come to fruition.
